Ruto Promises KSh2 Billion Lifeline to Rescue Kenya Methodist University

President William Ruto has pledged government support to help Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) settle a debt of up to KSh2 billion, following a consultative meeting with leaders of the Methodist Church at State House, Nairobi.

In a statement shared on Friday, February 20, 2026, the Head of State said the government recognises the important role faith-based institutions play in national development.

He noted that churches have continued to support communities through education, health services, social programmes, and moral guidance.

According to the President, the engagement with the Methodist Church leadership reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with religious organisations to advance shared development goals.

He described the Church as a key partner whose grassroots presence has positively impacted lives across the country.

Ruto said the planned financial support would help ease the financial burden facing Kenya Methodist University, allowing the institution to continue offering education and other essential services without disruption. The university has been struggling with debt, which has threatened its operations and long-term stability.

The President emphasised that supporting institutions run by faith-based organisations is part of a broader effort to strengthen sectors that directly serve communities.

He noted that such partnerships are critical in improving access to quality education and social services, especially in areas where government reach may be limited.

During the meeting, Ruto also called on church leaders to support government efforts in addressing social challenges affecting the country, particularly drug and substance abuse among young people.

He urged religious institutions to use their influence to provide mentorship, counselling, and moral direction to help guide the youth.

The President said the fight against drug abuse requires a joint approach involving families, communities, religious organisations, and government agencies.

He expressed confidence that the Church’s leadership at the grassroots level would play a major role in shaping responsible and disciplined young citizens.

Church leaders who attended the meeting welcomed the continued collaboration between the government and faith-based organisations.

They acknowledged the importance of partnerships in addressing financial challenges facing institutions and in strengthening community development initiatives.

The government’s pledge to support Kenya Methodist University is expected to stabilise the institution and restore confidence among students, staff, and stakeholders.

It also signals a renewed commitment by the administration to work with religious organisations in promoting education, social welfare, and national development.

Ruto maintained that cooperation between the state and the Church remains essential in building a society grounded in strong values, opportunity, and shared progress.
