Possible Uhuru–Gachagua Alliance Sparks 2027 Political Speculation

By Malticks - February 16, 2026

Political signals emerging within opposition circles suggest that a possible working relationship between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could be taking shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Although the two leaders found themselves on opposing sides during the 2022 election period, recent developments indicate that their past differences may be fading as new political interests begin to align.

Observers point to Gachagua’s recent public defence of Uhuru as one of the strongest signs of a shifting relationship.

In recent weeks, the former deputy president has repeatedly spoken out against attacks directed at the retired head of state, particularly criticism related to his continued involvement in political matters.

Gachagua has also warned government leaders against targeting Uhuru, stating that he will not allow the former president to be disrespected.

He further suggested that if the opposition forms the next government, any benefits withdrawn from Uhuru would be restored.

Political insiders believe this change in tone is not accidental but part of ongoing efforts to build unity within the broader opposition movement, now operating under the United Alternative Government banner.

The possibility of a partnership has also been reinforced by remarks from Gachagua’s close allies. Democracy for Citizens Party deputy leader Cleophas Malala recently hinted that cooperation between the two leaders is already underway behind the scenes.

According to him, such an alliance would significantly strengthen the opposition’s chances against President William Ruto in 2027.

Within the Jubilee Party, changes in leadership roles and public messaging have further fueled speculation.

Party officials have defended recent internal adjustments, describing them as strategic moves meant to strengthen the party’s position within the opposition coalition.

Perhaps the clearest sign of warming relations has come from Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe. Once a strong critic of Gachagua, Murathe has recently spoken positively about him, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the opposition to victory.

He noted that Gachagua is a focused leader and urged him to concentrate fully on the presidential race.

Murathe also indicated that opposition leaders are working toward a consensus on a single presidential candidate, describing the expected announcement as a future “white smoke” moment that will unite all partners.

On his part, Uhuru Kenyatta has also taken steps that appear to reduce tensions. During a Jubilee mobilisation meeting, he warned party members against attacking Gachagua and said disciplinary action would be taken against those who continue such criticism.

The directive was widely interpreted as a signal that the party leadership is open to closer cooperation.

Political analysts say these developments reflect a broader reality of Kenyan politics, where alliances often shift based on shared interests rather than past rivalries.

With the 2027 contest expected to be highly competitive, opposition leaders are increasingly focused on building a strong and united front.

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has also weighed in, arguing that a partnership between Uhuru and Gachagua would significantly alter the political landscape.

He suggested that even a public show of unity between the two could reshape voter perception and energise opposition supporters.
