Inter-Community Clashes in Trans Mara Leave 7 Dead and 120 Homes Destroyed

Seven people have been confirmed dead in Isinya, Kajiado County, following violent clashes between communities in Ongata Barikoi and Lolgorian, Trans Mara South.

The unrest, which erupted over the course of a single day, has left more than 260 families displaced and over 120 homes torched, according to the Rift Valley Commissioner, Dr. Aldi Hassan.

Speaking to the press, Commissioner Hassan condemned those fuelling the conflict and issued a stern warning that there would be “no sacred cows” when it comes to maintaining security.

Authorities have arrested two individuals believed to be instigators, while 20 others remain at large as investigations continue.

“We witnessed deadly clashes yesterday where seven people lost their lives, and 120 houses were burnt, leaving over 260 people homeless,” said Dr. Aldi Hassan.

“We have arrested two main suspects to assist with our investigations, while pursuing 20 others who are currently on the run.”

The commissioner also announced plans for operations targeting illegal firearms, urging residents in possession of unlicensed weapons to surrender them to authorities to prevent further escalation.

The conflict has forced hundreds of residents to seek refuge in nearby schools as tensions remain high.

Initial reports suggest that the clashes were triggered by a long-standing land dispute, which has reignited hostilities between the two communities. The violence has already caused extensive property damage, with losses estimated in millions of shillings.

Dr. Aldi Hassan appealed to residents to embrace dialogue over retaliation.

“I urge the residents here to embrace peace and dialogue as opposed to resorting to violence. The government offices are open for any burning issues, and we will address them urgently,” he noted.

In addition, the Rift Valley Commissioner called on political leaders and opinion shapers in the region to refrain from politicising the matter, warning that doing so could inflame tensions further.

“Leaders must avoid using this conflict for political gain. Instead, we need constructive dialogue to achieve a lasting solution,” he said.

Security forces have since increased patrols in the affected areas, focusing on preventing further clashes and protecting displaced families.

Relief efforts are being coordinated to provide temporary shelter, food, and medical support for those affected. Local authorities are also working with community elders to facilitate peace talks and restore calm.

The Trans Mara clashes come amid a busy festive season, compounding challenges for local authorities trying to ensure security and protect livelihoods.

The authorities’ swift response, including arrests, operations against illegal firearms, and engagement with community leaders, is aimed at curbing the violence and restoring normalcy.
