"I Repeat, I Cannot Be SG of Mediocrity" Sifuna Remains Firm on His Move from ODM

By Malticks - March 30, 2026

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has once again stirred debate within opposition ranks after maintaining his sharp criticism of newly appointed ODM Secretary General, Oburu Odinga.

Speaking during a recent political engagement, Sifuna did not hold back, insisting that the party deserved stronger leadership at a time when it is facing internal shifts and growing pressure from rival camps.

Sifuna, who was recently ousted from the powerful Secretary General position, appeared to question the criteria used in Oburu’s appointment, suggesting that merit and energy should be key in steering ODM forward.

While he stopped short of launching a direct personal attack, his remarks—widely interpreted as branding Oburu’s leadership as underwhelming—have sparked mixed reactions across the political divide.

The comments come at a sensitive moment for ODM, which is navigating internal realignments following Raila Odinga’s increasing focus on continental roles.

Party supporters have been urging unity, especially as new political formations like the Linda Mwananchi movement begin to gain traction across the country.

Oburu Odinga, a veteran politician and elder brother to Raila, has yet to respond directly to Sifuna’s remarks.

However, his allies have dismissed the criticism, arguing that his experience and loyalty to the party make him the right choice to stabilize ODM during a transitional phase.

Meanwhile, Sifuna continues to enjoy support from a section of youthful leaders who believe the party must evolve to remain competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His recent appearances alongside leaders like James Orengo and Babu Owino at public rallies have further fueled speculation about emerging power centers within the opposition.

As political temperatures slowly begin to rise, all eyes remain on ODM to see whether it can manage internal dissent or risk deeper divisions at a critical time in Kenya’s political landscape.
