Gaichuhie Appointed Anti-Counterfeit Chair After Gichunge’s Removal
By Malticks - January 19, 2026
Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry Lee Kinyanjui has appointed former Subukia Member of Parliament Nelson Ributhi Gaichuhie as the new chairperson of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) Board. The appointment takes effect from January 16, 2026, and will run for a three-year term.
The appointment was confirmed through a gazette notice issued by the Cabinet Secretary, who said the decision was made in line with provisions of the Anti-Counterfeit Act. Gaichuhie will serve both as a board member and the chairperson of the authority.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Anti-Counterfeit Act, the Cabinet Secretary appoints Nelson Ributhi Gaichuhie as a Member and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Anti-Counterfeit Authority for a period of three years,” the notice stated.
The Anti-Counterfeit Authority welcomed the appointment, congratulating Gaichuhie and expressing confidence in his leadership as he assumes office at a time when the fight against counterfeit goods remains a major concern for the country.
Gaichuhie replaces Josephat Gichunge Mwirabua Kabeabea, whose appointment was revoked in November 2025 following a corruption scandal.

Kinyanjui cited legal provisions allowing the Cabinet Secretary to revoke appointments when necessary to protect public interest and institutional integrity.
Kabeabea’s removal followed his arrest by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations that he demanded bribes from a Chinese businessman.

Investigators conducted raids at his residence and offices before he was charged with multiple counts of bribery.
He later appeared before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where he denied the charges. The court released him on bond and imposed restrictions, including surrendering his passport and avoiding contact with witnesses, as the case continues.
Before his removal, Kabeabea had served as ACA chair since February 2023. He previously represented Tigania East Constituency in Parliament between 2017 and 2022.
Gaichuhie brings both political and administrative experience to the role. He served as Member of Parliament for Subukia Constituency from 2007 to 2017 under the Party of National Unity.

After leaving Parliament, he was appointed Chief Administrative Secretary at the National Treasury and Planning, where he gained experience in public finance and government operations.
His appointment comes at a time when the Anti-Counterfeit Authority is under pressure to strengthen enforcement, restore public trust, and protect consumers and businesses from fake and substandard products.
